NYSbirds-L List Rules
and Information
NYSbirds-L is an email list (the List) focused on
the discussion of birds and birding in and around New York State.
The primary purpose of the List is to disseminate
information about wild bird sightings in and around New York State in a timely
manner and to provide an effective electronic forum for New York State area
birders.
Questions and limited discussion on topics such
as bird behavior, identification, conservation, and distribution—especially as
these subjects relate to wild birds in and around New York State—are welcomed
and encouraged. The List is not for the discussion of pet birds or falconry.
Ultimately, the determination of what is and is
not appropriate to discuss on the List—or when a discussion needs to end—will
be made by the Listowner.
List Rules
We are all here for the same reason—we like birds and birding. The subscribers of the List are a very diverse group with varying levels of posts. Expect anything from lengthy checklists and long detailed trip reports to one-line sighting updates or behavioral observations and joy expressed from a new sighting. Please be respectful of each other. Treat your fellow birder as you would like to be treated yourself.
· Attachments
Attachments are generally discouraged on the List to help prevent the spread of malware. Limited bird sighting photos are acceptable.
· Commerce, Religion, Politics
Commercial, religious, or politically charged messages, and inappropriate or offensive material are prohibited on the List.
· Personal or Private Messages
Personal or private messages should not be sent to the List. Know your destination address before sending an email.
· Replies to Questions
Replies to questions asked on the List should only be posted to the List if the content is relevant to all subscribers.
·
Flaming or Offensive Messages
Flaming or offensive messages will not be tolerated and may result in immediate suspension or removal from the List.
· Pet Birds or Falconry
Pet birds or falconry is not to be discussed except as far as these topics directly relate to wild birds or birding in and around New York State.
· “I agree, too!”
The List may expose issues which subscribers may or may not agree with. Subscribers should only respond to that same issue if they have substantive information to add to the discussion.
· The Delete Key
If a particular aspect of a posting or repeated postings is bothersome to a subscriber, the subscriber should use the delete key first. If certain postings continue to bother a subscriber, please contact the Listowner.
· Location, location, location
NYSbirds-L has a nearly 1,500 subscribers. Bird
sightings occur from across an enormous region (54,475 square miles!). Include
the location of your sighting relative to the nearest city or town. Also
consider providing a map link or eBird hotspot link. Include your own general
location when contributing to a discussion.
